Multiple Birth Story
I
had my babies on Sunday September 26th at exactly 34 weeks. I had gone into
preterm labor at 28 weeks and 31 weeks already, so I wasn't suprised when I
started having contractions the night before. I went to bed early and hoped they
would stop . . . The contractions weren't strong or painful like before so I
didn't really panic. I woke up the next morning in a middle of a contraction and
started timing them . . . Again, they weren't painful but I was having them
every 3 minutes. I woke up DH and told him what was going on. We started getting
ready to go to the hospital.
We got to the hospital . . . My contractions were being picked up every 2 to 3
minutes . . . They checked my cervix and I was dialated to 4 cms. I was admited
and put on Magnesium sulfate (yuck) right away. It slowed down my contractions
but my cervix was still changing . . . They also did an u/s and saw that baby A
was transverse with her belly towards my cervix . . . Not a good thing if my
water broke considering the cord would come out first. That's when they decided
to transfer me to a different hospital (one with a great NICU). Right on time
too, aparently. Just after I got there my contractions came back full force
(every 3 minutes). The Dr. there checked me and said I was only 4 cms . . . He
said he'd wait half an hour or so and check me again . . . My contractions
didn't hurt but they weren't slowing down . . . He came in a short while after
and checked me again, asking if I was in any pain . . . I said no. His eyes
widened as he checked me and said I'd gone from 4 cms to about 7 1/2 in 45
minutes. Baby A was also showing signs of distress with each contraction. He did
a quick u/s and said "It looks like you're going to be having those babies right
now." Everything was so hectic then as they started preparing me for a
c-section. I was so scared. I was terrified of having surgery and completely
freaked out at the fact that everyone was rushing around like it was some huge
emergency.
There were a ton of doctors and nurses in the OR. I started to panic while
everyone told me "everything's going to be okay." I didn't feel any pain but I
did feel a lot of tugging and pulling . . . Our baby girl Keira Rayne was born
at 9:13 p.m. she had her cord wrapped around her neck several times which is why
she was showing signs of distress . . . Our baby boy Logan Scott was born at
9:14 p.m.
Keira was 4 lbs 7 oz 17 inches long and Logan was 4 lbs 4oz 18 inches long.
Keira had a harder time then Logan starting off and was put oxygen right away.
She did great though . . . She was off of oxygen just two days after she was
born and she was suckling her feedings right away. She came home 12 days after
she was born. Logan was a really lazy eater and had no interest in sucking for
quite some time . . . He developed an intestinal infection but recovered from
that after a week of antibiotics . . . He spent the rest of his time in the NICU
(total of 4 weeks) learning to eat.
Both babies are doing great now and perfectly healthy.
