Kacia's Multiple Birth Story

Bryce & Brayden's Arrival...

April 5th, we went in for our regular 37 week biophysicaL profile and check up, I had been having contractions on and off for about 2 weeks, and had already dilated to 3 cm. and was at 0 station. Bryaden had been flipping back and forth for months, and after the bpp we saw that he was head down. Brayden's weight was more than 20% less than Bryce's and this concerned my ob. She doesn't like twins to have more than a 20% difference in their weights as one is getting more nourishment than the other. Jokingly Marland and I told her that since Brayden was head down again to lets go ahead and go over to the hospital and get them out. She asked us to wait a second and called the Maternal Fetal Medicine Dr. and consulted him about inducing my labor. I thought that she was kidding when at 11:25 a.m. she told me that we could head over to the hospital (which was right next door).
We called Marland's mom first (since it was her birthday) and then my mom and the rest of my family. We were goingto try a vaginal delivery since both babies were head down and Bryce was ready to go. I was only dilated 4 cm. and having really strong contractions, BUT, every tmie I had a ctx. the babies heart beats dropped. This really concerned by ob. She came into the room and checked me and said I'm sorry, but we are going to have to do a c-section. I was scared to death. I didn't know what to expect. I've never had any sort of surgery before. They made everyone leave the room while the prepped me, and then wisked me away to the operating room. It felt like I was in there for hours with them getting everything ready and Marland and my mom were out in the hall waiting to come in. FINALLY they started the c-section and I am bawling. I was soo scared that they were going to cut and I was going to feel it. I don't think that I was worried about the babies, I knew that they would be fine, but I was scared to death of the pain. At 3:39 p.m. Bryce Alexander Hunter was born. He weighed 6 lbs. 3 oz. and was 20" long. Then at 3:40 p.m. Brayden Thomas Hunter was born. He weighed 4 lbs. 11 oz. and was 18 1/2" long. We found out that if their heartbeats hadn't dropped and I was able to have Bryce vaginally, I would have still had to have a c-section b/c Brayden's umbilical cord was wrapped around his shoulder and under his arm. I guess from flipping head down and then back up all those times got him all tangled up. If my dr. hadn't caught it I would have had to recover from BOTH deliveries. Neither baby had to go to NICU, neither had required oxygen. We did let them stay in the nursery from 3:30 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. 2 nights so that we could get a little sleep. We were truly blessed to have such healthy little munchkins.
